Uber

Uber doesn't build its own robotaxi. It's the app layer connecting riders to whichever autonomous fleet is operating in a given city — and in LA, that's more than one.

The strategy

After selling its own self-driving unit in 2020, Uber pivoted to a partnership-first model: rather than building the technology itself, it integrates other companies' autonomous vehicles into its existing ride-hailing app. In Los Angeles, that means several fleets will eventually be bookable from the same Uber app, each running its own hardware and software underneath.

Volkswagen / MOIA America — ID. Buzz

Volkswagen's MOIA America unit (rebranded from VW ADMT in early 2026) is testing autonomous ID. Buzz electric minivans on LA streets right now, with a human safety operator on board. The ID. Buzz seats up to seven, runs a 27-sensor suite built with Mobileye technology, and has a range of about 234 miles per charge. Uber and MOIA have said they're on track for rides — still with safety drivers at first — on the Uber app in LA by late 2026, with full autonomy expected in 2027 pending regulatory approval. LA is the first city in a planned multi-market rollout of thousands of vehicles.

NVIDIA

Uber and NVIDIA announced a deal to launch a global fleet of NVIDIA software-driven autonomous vehicles, starting in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the first half of 2027, with plans to scale to 28 cities by 2028.

Lucid + Nuro

Uber has also introduced its own "global robotaxi" — a Lucid vehicle running Nuro's self-driving software — targeted to launch in LA and the Bay Area.

Rivian

Separately, Uber has struck a deal to purchase up to 50,000 robotaxis from Rivian by 2030 — a longer-term commitment without a confirmed LA launch date yet.

Stellantis + Wayve

A newer three-way alliance announced in 2026 pairs Stellantis (manufacturing) with Wayve (self-driving software) on the Uber network. No confirmed LA date has been announced.

Also bookable via Uber

Zoox is expected to be bookable through the Uber app in LA by mid-2027, in addition to its own separate app.

Get the app

All of Uber's fleet partners above will be bookable through the same Uber app — no separate download needed for VW/MOIA, NVIDIA, Lucid+Nuro, or Rivian rides once each one goes live.

Partnership details and timelines are based on public company announcements as of September 2026 and are subject to change.
